Plan News was updated on January 12, 2009.

Fourth quarter 2008 participant statements — Your fourth quarter TSP participant statement, which covers the period from October 1 through December 31, 2008, is now available on this Web site.  To get e-mail updates whenever new participant statements are added to the TSP Web site, you can sign up at “Get E-mail Updates” on the Home page of this Web site.  If you receive your quarterly participant statements by mail, you will not receive the Thrift Savings Plan Highlights newsletter with your fourth quarter statement.  We are publishing a special January/February Highlights, which will be available on this Web site in January and mailed to you in February.

Processing Schedule — The TSP processing schedule for January 2009 is available on this Web site.

Form 1099-R — The TSP will mail IRS Form 1099-R by January 31 to participants who received withdrawals or other taxable distributions during 2008.  We will also post the 1099-R forms on this Web site.  Make sure the TSP has your correct address.  If you need to report an address change and are separated from service, use the Account Access section of this Web site.  If you are actively employed, contact your agency or service.

IRS contribution limits for 2009 — For 2009, the IRS permits you to contribute up to $16,500 in tax-deferred money to the TSP.  If you are a member of the uniformed services, you may contribute a total of $49,000 in tax-deferred and tax-exempt money.  If you will be age 50 or older during 2009, you may also contribute up to $5,500 in additional “catch-up” contributions if you will reach the $16,500 limit in 2009.

Annual TSP participant statements — Next month, the TSP will begin mailing annual TSP participant statements to all participants.  Your annual statement will summarize the activity in your account during 2008 and provide other helpful account information.  If you do not want to receive a mailed copy of this statement, you can elect to opt out on this Web site.  However, you will still be mailed copies of the annual letter from the TSP’s Executive Director and the January/February 2009 Thrift Savings Plan Highlights newsletter.
