NGC Content Development

Methods Used to Identify Guidelines for Consideration

The National Guideline Clearinghouse™ (NGC) uses a range of methods to identify and collect the most comprehensive set of guidelines for consideration against its inclusion criteria. These include:

Publishing a notice in the Federal Register* inviting guideline developers to submit their guidelines for consideration; (*Adobe Acrobat Reader is required to view document.)
Periodic mailings to guideline developers
Iterative searches of the literature using resources such as:

the National Library of Medicine's Medline, HealthSTAR, HSRProj, and DIRLINE databases;
the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL®) database;
the Institute for Scientific Information's (ISI's) Current Contents-Clinical Medicine database;
the American Psychological Association's PsycInfo® and PsycLit® databases;
annual directories such as ECRI's Healthcare Standards Directory

the World Wide Web

Hand-searches of primary and secondary literature sources
Suggestions from NGC users (i.e., suggestions received via e-mail at info@guideline.gov or webmanager@guideline.gov)

NGC Inclusion Criteria

Each guideline that is submitted to NGC is reviewed against a standard set of Inclusion Criteria.
