The OSU College of Veterinary Medicine, Office of Research is proud to announce the availability of summer stipend awards for veterinary students seeking research training. The awards will provide summer stipends for students working under OSU College faculty members on approved research projects. The stipends will be awarded on a competitive basis and will pay stipends ($4,200-$5,200 depending on source of funding) for the summer quarter of 2008. Stipend support is funded from many sources within the College and from a grant proposal funded by Merck-Merial.
The purpose of the training program is to provide an environment for veterinary students to attain specific technical and conceptual skills to perform hypothesis-based research involving biochemical and molecular systems. Specifically, veterinary students are to be trained in state-of-the-art molecular and cellular techniques to systematically evaluate models of human and animal disease. This knowledge is critical for furthering the understanding of fundamental issues important to public and animal health.
OSU has received funding from Merck-Merial for 2 positions with the College matching for 2 additional slots. Of these four slots, up to 2 are open to non-host (non OSU) students. Both Internal and External applications are due February 1, 2008. This program falls under the OSU CVM Student Research Program. The applicant should follow the application guidelines stated below. Non host students should contact either Dr. Davis or Ms. Morscher for more information on the availability of funds for housing and travel costs to the college.
Many research oriented activities will be available to the students who participate in the summer program. Some of these include College sponsored Brown Bag Seminars, University sponsored seminars, field trips and travel to the Merck-Merial Symposium.
The trainee's advisor will help organize the student's program. The program is oriented toward a close working relationship between the student and advisor. The advisor is responsible for the overall coordination of the student's research, advising the student in the conduct of scientific research, evaluating and promoting effective writing, and monitoring the progress of the student. The advisor will share with the student the responsibility of planning and directing the summer research program.
Veterinary students that have completed at least three quarters (one academic year) of the veterinary professional curriculum by June 2008 are eligible. Trainees are expected to have acquired a minimal cumulative grade point-hour ratio (CPHR) of 3.0 in veterinary school. Applications will be reviewed by a committee of faculty representing all departments in the College. Awards will be announced on or before March 1, 2008.
All materials should be sent as electronic (email) attachments (doc files or PDFs) to Michele Morscher e-mail by 5:00 pm February 1, 2008 for the OSU program.
