AFS Common Name: Rainbow Trout
AFS Sci. Name: Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum, 1792)
AFS Other Names: Salmo penshinensis, S. gairdneri; Kamchatkan trout, steelhead
(anadromous form). Salmo mykiss has been shown to be the senior synonym of the
rainbow trout S. gairdneri, native to western North America, but very widely introduced.
We include it here, even though it appears on the North American list, because of the
change both in generic and specific name.

AFS Synonyms: The term steelhead is applied to sea-run rainbow trout and some
populations from large lakes.

G. R. Smith and R. F. Stearley, 1989, Fisheries (Bethesda) 14(1):4,
showed that the relationships of the trouts of the cutthroat and rainbow series lie with
Onchorhynchus rather than with Salmo. The Committee earlier noted its endorsement
of this change, 1989, Fisheries (Bethesda) 14(1):5.

This species, previously known as gairdneri in North America, occurs also in Kamchatka,
where it was first described as mykiss. This matter is discussed in detail by G. R. Smith and
R. F. Stearley, 1989, Fisheries (Bethesda) 14(1):5.
