2009 Summer Scholar Research Program

The OSU College of Veterinary Medicine, Office of Research and Graduate Studies is proud to announce the availability of summer stipend awards for veterinary students seeking research training. The awards will provide summer stipends for students working under OSU College faculty members on approved research projects. The stipends will be awarded on a competitive basis and will pay stipends ($4,000-$5,200 depending on source of funding) for the summer quarter of 2009.

Goal

The primary goal of this program is to develop veterinary scientists with knowledge and skills in comparative medicine and related research problems.  This training program will provide an environment for veterinary students to attain specific technical and conceptual skills to perform hypothesis-based research involving biochemical and molecular systems.

Merck-Merial Scholars Program

There will be 4 positions to be funded by the Merck-Merial Program for 2009.  The stipends for these positions are at the higher level in the range stated above.  To be considered for one of these slots, you must complete the application and submit it by the January 15, 2009 deadline.  The application package can be found below.  More information on the National Merck-Merial Veterinary Scholars Program can be found at Merck-Merial.

Morris Animal Foundation Veterinary Student Scholar Program

The Morris Animal Foundation also sponsors a summer research program.  Up to 3 applications from each school may be submitted for consideration - one in small companion animal research,one in large companion animal research and one in wildlife/special species research.  To be considered for one of the MAF Scholar slots, you will need to complete the appropriate application and submit it to the College's Office of Research for initial review by the January 15, 2009 deadline.  More information can be found at the following links.

Application and Selection Process

Program Eligibility

Veterinary students that have completed at least three quarters (one academic year) of the veterinary professional curriculum by June 2009 are eligible.  Trainees are expected to have acquired a minimal cumulative grade point-hour ratio (CPHR) of 3.0 in veterinary school.  Applications will be reviewed by a committee of faculty representing all departments in the College.  Each application will be evaluated and given a score 2009 Score Sheet

Deadline

All materials should be sent as electronic (email) attachments (doc files or PDFs) to Michele Morscher e-mail by 5:00 pm January 15, 2009 to be considered for one of the Merck/Merial or Morris Animal Foundation positions, or April 1, 2009 for the OSU program.  The original signed hardcopy should also be submitted to Michele Morscher, 127L VMAB, 1900 Coffey Road, Columbus, OH 43210.
