Veterinary Medicine’s Future

Veterinary medical expertise must constantly adapt to meet the challenges of the field and the changing demands of society. Ongoing research brings new knowledge and technology to be incorporated into the clinical or public practice of veterinary medicine. Veterinary research has often benefited from the enormous investments that society has made in the search for medical progress. Much advancement has been adapted for veterinary use, but veterinary medicine must pursue its own animal-specific inquiries on diseases and disease management.

Some specific needs are:

Advances in clinical veterinary medicine

  • Dagnostic imaging
  • Radiation therapy
  • Critical care services
  • Human/animal bond and palliative care

Advances in biomedical research

Advances in biomedical research partnering with other scientific disciplines to elucidate mechanism of disease and treatment using animal, tissue, and cell models improve control of animal disease and its transmission to other species including human developed genetically engineered treatment modalities and vaccines

Partnering with public health

  • Training post graduate experts in food safety, and governmental regulatory affairs
  • Developing expertise in the management of disease outbreaks because of bioterrorism
