Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
Tracer Bullet 97-3
|
|
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), also referred
to as Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), is a neurobiological condition
affecting children and adults. Symptoms include easy distractibility,
impulsiveness, and in some cases hyperactivity. The American Psychiatric
Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders,
fourth edition (DSM IV) defines an adult or child as having the
ADHD disorder if there is "a persistent pattern of inattention
and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that is more frequent and severe
than is typically observed in individuals at a comparable level
of development;" if "some hyperactive-impulsive or inattentive
symptoms that cause impairment have been present before age 7 years;" if
some impairments are present in at least two settings; and "there
is clear evidence of interference with developmentally appropriate
social, academic, or occupational functioning."
ADHD, once called hyperkinesis or minimal brain dysfunction, is
one of the most common mental disorders among children, affecting
3 to 5 percent of all children. ADHD can also continue into adolescence
and adulthood. In the last decade a variety of medications, behavior-changing
therapies, and educational options have become available for treatment
of children and adults with ADHD. Medications for treatment of
ADHD include methylphenidate (Ritalin), dextroamphetamine, (Dexedrine
or Dextrostat), and pemoline (Cylert). For may people these stimulant
medications reduce hyperactivity and improve ability to focus,
learn, and work. Use of these drugs has sparked controversy because
of the possible side-effects and because many feel that they are
prescribed unnecessarily for too many children.
Medication can help control some of the behavior problems, but
more often, there are other aspects which medication cannot treat.
For that reason treatment for ADHD is usually multimodal, involving
both drug and behavioral therapy. Intervention approaches sometimes
involve the whole family and can include psychotherapy, cognitive-behavioral
therapy, social skills training, and parenting training. Other
treatments have included diet therapy and holistic medicine.
Many adults with ADHD and parents of children with ADHD find support
groups to be very helpful. National associations listed at the
end of this guide can provide further referral to local chapters
and appropriate information. There are also a number of on-line
bulletin boards and resources available over the Internet.
Not meant to be a comprehensive bibliography, this Tracer Bullet
is designed -- as the name of the series implies -- to put the
reader "on target."
