Additional Information for HAMM 2001 Participants
(updated 04-Oct-2001)

Visas and Travel Regulations:

All overseas participants are required to have a valid passport with valid visa. Please consult the nearest Chinese Consulate or Embassy in your country. An invitation form is necessary to apply for a visa and should be requested from the Local Organizing Committee as early as possible. Tourist visas, with no need of an invitation form, are also a possibility. However,The Chinese Embassy in Washington, DC has recommended that a business visa (and not a tourist visa) is appropriate since the purpose of the visit is attending the HAMM Conference.

Also, Washington Passport Service & and Visa Service has proved very helpful and responsive in expediting applications for visas. They offer 'same-day' processing for US$105.00 and five-day processing for US$55.00.

Travel by rail from Beijing to Qingdao:

The train from Beijing to Qingdao is an interesting option. There are two trains each day, both leaving in the evening, one at about 5PM and the other at about 10PM. The trip takes about 12 hours. There are no changes. The train starts in Beijing and you get off in Qingdao about 12 hours later. You will probably prefer a 'soft sleeper'- a compartment with 4 beds. You can get one of the four for 320 yuan- about $40 US, but are better off getting the whole compartment for 1260 yuan, about $160 US, and sharing with a couple of friends. The compartment will accomodate 4, but it's more comfortable for 3, using the extra berth for baggage. Check with the Local Organizing Committee for further details.
