LEGWOLD: Risk doesn't dim shine on gig for McDaniels

LEGWOLD: Risk doesn't dim shine on gig for McDaniels

January 15, 2009

Josh McDaniels was a winner in the coaching lottery this week because he got one of the spots. And no matter that virtually every guy who's ever taken an NFL head coaching job leaves it because he has been fired, virtually every guy who has worked in the league wants to be one.

SADOWSKI: Is Lecavalier an untouchable?

SADOWSKI: Is Lecavalier an untouchable?

January 15, 2009

Joe Sakic and Steve Yzerman immediately come to mind - there is no such animal in the NHL as an untouchable. Even Wayne Gretzky was traded twice.

RINGOLSBY: Rice vs. Ruth is apples vs. oranges

RINGOLSBY: Rice vs. Ruth is apples vs. oranges

January 15, 2009

Just like the value of the dollar, the value of a stat must be adjusted to the era in which it is compiled. Jim Rice had an impressive career, but did he have a better first decade than Babe Ruth?

LINCICOME: First-timer coaches don't always make grade

January 15, 2009

Optimism has a free pass until the Broncos' opener, maybe even until halftime of the Broncos' opener, leaving some 33 weeks of reassurance, allowing every choice to be seen as another packet of sugar in the candy machine.

TOMASSON: Plenty of NBA pranks for the memories

TOMASSON: Plenty of NBA pranks for the memories

January 15, 2009

Jason Thompson found out what can happen when you get lax with the lox. Thompson, a Sacramento first-year forward, had been remiss in his rookie duties of bringing bagels and toppings to the team's veterans. Thompson then walked out of New Year's Eve practice and got quite a surprise. Veterans had filled his Escalade with popcorn.

Sam Adams' Open Mic: Deadline deals destined to shuffle NBA’s deck

January 16, 2009

The NBA trading deadline is Feb. 19 and contenders are looking to fortify, if not solidify, their places in the playoff race. Here are four players who could be on the move, including one former Nugget who relocated just a few months ago.

Sam Adams' Open Mic: 'Down in front!' cries should be heeded

Sam Adams' Open Mic: 'Down in front!' cries should be heeded

January 15, 2009

Before Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban made his presence felt around courtside at the Pepsi Center on Tuesday, it was on my mind who should be on or near the benches during NBA games.

KRIEGER: Broncos, as Chiefs, go with what they know

KRIEGER: Broncos, as Chiefs, go with what they know

January 14, 2009

If you're into science experiments, the Broncos and Chiefs just started a pretty interesting one. The Chiefs put their money on talent, naming the top personnel man on the market, Scott Pioli, to run their football operation. The Broncos put their money on coaching, naming Josh McDaniels to replace Mike Shanahan.

LINCICOME: Oh, boy, Broncos made a risky move

January 13, 2009

You do not fire Batman to hire Robin. The examples of boy wonders in football coaching are impressive, starting with another John Carroll alum - just as is Josh By Gosh McDaniels - a man who actually played in the NFL, Don Shula.

KRIEGER: It's Texas, USC in winner-take-all dream

January 13, 2009

In case you didn't know it before the NFL divisional playoffs, you do now: The teams the experts think are best don't always win when it counts.

KRIEGER: 'Wise' McDaniels bowls over Bowlen

KRIEGER: 'Wise' McDaniels bowls over Bowlen

January 12, 2009

First of all, he's got a great haircut. You may not think that's important, but I do. The man clearly has taste. Second, he speaks in complete sentences. Again, this might not matter to you, but as someone who tries to understand and convey what football coaches think, I can tell you it's extremely unusual. Photo gallery Video

LINCICOME: Call me underwhelmed with playoffs

January 11, 2009

Well, at least the 8-8 San Diego Mediocres are no longer playing for a trip to the Super Bowl.

KRIEGER: Broncos trying to recapture glory days

January 11, 2009

Welcome to the next big thing from the gulag in New England, where Bill Belichick’s management style comes straight from the handbook on how to grow mushrooms. Not his fault, but Josh McDaniels follows in the footsteps of Charlie Weis, Romeo Crennel and Eric Mangini.

SAUNDERS: Vitale can be liability with capital 'L,' baby!

SAUNDERS: Vitale can be liability with capital 'L,' baby!

January 11, 2009

Criticizing Dick Vitale is, to some, equivalent to burning the American flag.

KRIEGER: Iverson's window of opportunity is now

KRIEGER: Iverson's window of opportunity is now

January 10, 2009

It was ugly. It was slow. In short, it was Pistons basketball. And Allen Iverson, who has never played that way, struggled along with everyone else to make a shot.
