Vehicle Removal from Red Canyon Scheduled for January 29
On Thursday, January 29, 2009 the east entrance road of Colorado National Monument (Rim Rock Drive) will be temporarily closed between 6:00 am – 7:00 am to allow a 240 ton crane to travel from the East Entrance Gate, up the east hill and on to Red Canyon to remove the vehicle which went off the road on January 21.

Monument Road Bridge Replacement Scheduled for January - April
Construction to replace the bridge on Monument Road where it crosses the Redlands Water Power Canal will start January 5 and last through April 30.

Winter Driving Conditions on Rim Rock Drive - Expect Icy Conditions!
Rim Rock Drive from Colorado National Monument’s visitor center eastward to DS Road will not be plowed during active storms and will not be a primary access road for those who may otherwise use 16 ½ Road in good weather. Commuters needing to access Rim Rock Drive during winter storms should plan to use the DS Road on East Rim Rock Drive to exit the Monument as the rest of Rim Rock Drive will not be plowed.

Colorado National Monument's 23-mile Rim Rock Drive was built almost entirely using picks, shovels, and sheer muscle strength to remove massive rocks and debris. The engineering skill of Rim Rock Drive workers can be seen today in the road's tunnels and stonework.
