D'Evelyn Junior/Senior High School in Jefferson County can add another notch to its belt of accomplishments - Businessweek on Thursday named it the best overall school in Colorado.
The magazine worked with the San Francisco-based nonprofit Great Schools to determine the top schools in all 50 states.
Other categories and winners for Colorado:
* Best school serving low-income students: Centauri High School.
* Best improved school: Collegiate Academy of Colorado.
* Parents' choice, public: Frontier Academy, Greeley.
* Parents' choice, private: Alexander Dawson School.
D'Evelyn is a Jeffco public school started by a group of parents in 1994. It accepts students from across the district starting in grade seven and runs through grade 12. It emphasizes structured academics and strict discipline.
The school's test scores are among the best in Colorado, and the remediation rates of its graduates attending state colleges and universities are among the lowest.

I had the pleasure to work at D'Evelyn for many years and it was an amazing experience. The positive aspects of parental involvement are clearly evident in the success that has been achieved.

The state needs to come up with a path whereby these excellent schools can be cloned.
We waited seven years to get admitted to Littleton Academy, meanwhile the Littleton School district has had to close two half-empty schools. Something - politics - lack of energy - kept these two schools from becoming Littleton Academy clones.

Yes, D'Evelyn provides a great education. But the principal is totally wrong for this school. The attitude at this school is becomming so negative (students as well as many administrators) because of the principal, that I doubt you will see this school get a high ranking for much longer. The ranking is based largely on student test scores. Since everything at this school (including being able to voice opinions) has been taken away from the students, other than their free will, the test scores will likely be how they speak up. This is very sad because I believe the academics to be second to none. And yes, the school should be cloned. But only if the district will put it's foot down with the few vocal parents who dominate the "powers that be" and get good leadership. Otherwise it will soon become just another public school.
