JOINT MEETING WITH
D.C. AND UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND CHAPTERS
TO BE HELD OCTOBER 3

Our Fall, 1997 meeting will be a joint meeting with the D.C. and University of Maryland Chapters. It will be held at the Natcher Center at NIH on Friday, October 3, starting at 6:30 p.m. with a buffet dinner. The guest speaker will be Dr. Scott R. Woodward, Assistant Professor, Brigham Young University. His presentation is entitled, "The Genealogy of New Kingdom Pharaohs and Queens," and will be in the main auditorium following a buffet dinner (see details below). Dr. Woodward is using DNA analysis to confirm the lineage and identity of 18th (1570-1293 B.C.) and 19th (1293-1185 B.C.) Dynasty mummies. Although burial sites are often well marked as to whom they honor, in many instances, thieves have disrupted the burial sites in search of jewelry and valuables, leaving the mummified remains unwrapped and without identifying objects. The problem is further complicated by the fact that burial sites often contain several mummies.

Dr. Woodward is also using DNA analysis to help determine the relationship between pharaohs, their wives, and their offspring. It is known that royal brothers and sisters, and even fathers and daughters, intermarried. Can DNA analysis help resolve the incomplete historical record of the lineage of the pharaohs?

Another problem being addressed by Dr. Woodward is the relationship of Egyptians who died between 300 B.C. and 400 A.D. and were buried in common graves. Do multiple burials in one grave site indicate that it was a family grave site, or did some catastrophe create the need to bury several bodies in one location?

In his presentation, Dr. Woodward will discuss the obstacles in using DNA technologies to answer these questions and what he has been able to deduce from his research.
