2006 Project Earth Environmental Education Grant Recipients

Congratulations to the four schools to receive grants in 2006. These classrooms are using creative ways to study earth science by proposing hands-on learning opportunities that focus on issues such as watersheds and wetlands, air quality, renewable resources, energy conservation and the greening of schools.

Heritage Christian School, Bozeman — Environmental studies for students in grades 5 and 6 will be enhanced with the purchase of new weather and water kits. The curriculum includes instruction on wind, pressure systems, fronts, water erosion and the water cycle.

Hillcrest Elementary School, Butte — Students at Hillcrest are learning the three "Rs" — Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. Through this grant, their recycling program will be enhanced by building a central storage area and placing additional recycling containers.

Kennedy Elementary School, Butte — Students will use the grant to create an outdoor learning center that includes a habitat for birds and insects. Reading, math and science skills will be integrated as students plan the habitat and purchase plants and topsoil while staying within the budget.

Lame Deer High School, Lame Deer — Students will design and install landscaping at the school in an ongoing "learning lab" that will be a source of pride for students and the community.
