Shadow a Purdue Student

Find out what it's really like to be a Purdue student. Most Purdue colleges/schools offer student shadowing opportunities as described below. If the academic program in which you are interested does not offer a shadowing opportunity, you may still arrange to attend a class (with a student or on your own) through the Office of Admissions.

(Unless otherwise noted, use the contact information at the top of the college/school listing for more information or to schedule a shadow experience. Please note the advance notice required for the respective shadowing programs.)

The College of Agriculture can arrange a student shadowing experience with one of their student ambassadors. Contact the Office of Academic Programs at least two weeks in advance. 

College of Consumer and Family Sciences

The College of Consumer and Family Sciences (CFS) offers an informal student shadowing experience with the CFS Ambassadors. Prospective or admitted students should contact the College of Consumer and Family Sciences at least one week in advance to set up an appointment with an academic advisor and to meet a CFS ambassador in the major in which he/she has an interest. We will customize your visit to sit in on a class, tour a laboratory, or just chat with a current ambassador.

College of Engineering

Admitted engineering students may arrange to shadow a current engineering student by using the contact information above. In addition, when Purdue is in session, prospective students can meet with Purdue Student Engineering Foundation (PSEF) members on a walk-in basis by visiting the PSEF office in the Civil Engineering Building, Room 216B, between 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. weekdays.

School of Health Sciences

Prospective students interested in shadowing a student in the School of Health Sciences should contact an advisor at least one week in advance of a visit to campus. Students will be able to sit in on a class and visit with a current Health Sciences student. Best time to shadow is in the morning.

College of Liberal Arts

Contact the Liberal Arts Student Recruitment Office to schedule a personalized visit, which can include current student shadowing. The Student Recruitment Office assists with scheduling meetings with academic professionals, touring facilities, sitting in on courses, and meeting and shadowing current Liberal Arts students. Contact our office at least two weeks in advance to schedule.

Krannert School of Management

School of Nursing

Prospective students interested in shadowing a current Purdue Nursing student should contact an advisor from the School of Nursing at least one week in advance. Students will be able to sit in on an introductory nursing lecture (NUR 102). Note: Due to federal privacy laws and liability issues, students will not be able to shadow during clinical studies or at clinical sites.

School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences

The pre-pharmacy program at Purdue does not have an official student shadowing program. Pharmacy advisors and staff can meet with prospective students to discuss the the expectations of the pharmacy program, admissions policies, and student experiences.

College of Science

The College of Science offers an informal student shadowing program. Prospective students should contact the College of Science at least one week in advance to set up a shadowing experience. The prospective student will be paired with an ambassador from the College of Science and will have the opportunity to attend classes and spend time with a student ambassador. Also, when Purdue is in session, current science students are available to meet with prospective Purdue students on a walk-in basis 8:30 a.m.–noon and 1:30 p.m.–3:30 p.m. weekdays.

The College of Technology offers an informal student shadowing program during the fall semester only. Prospective or admitted students should contact the College of Technology at least one week in advance to schedule a shadowing experience. Students will be paired with a Technology Student Ambassador or Technology Student Council Member. Students will have the opportunity to attend a class, tour a lab if available, and spend time with a current student.

The Undergraduate Studies Program (USP) at Purdue does not have an official student shadowing program. However, USP does have dedicated advisors and student ambassadors who are able to speak with prospective students about the USP experience.

Veterinary Technology Program

The Veterinary Technology Program at Purdue does not have an official student shadowing program. Veterinary technology advisors and staff can meet with prospective students to discuss the unique veterinary technology curriculum and student experience.

Army ROTC

The Army ROTC offers student shadowing opportunities each Tuesday through Wednesday during the school year. Prospective students can shadow a cadet by contacting the Recruiting and Operations Officer at least two weeks in advance of a campus visit.  Students will be assigned a cadet sponsor and will be able to attend the Army ROTC lab, tour campus, and attend physical training the following morning.  The program begins at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday and ends Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. Overnight accommodations will be provided, and although an overnight stay is not a requirement of the shadowing program, it is encouraged.
