Enrolling in Distance Learning Courses

In an effort to better serve Purdue students enrolling in distance learning courses, the following changes have been instituted by the Continuing Education Student Learning Center:

Please note that, as of spring 2007, Purdue based distance learning courses will be identified with a "Y" suffix. IPSE courses originating from other institutions will continue to be identified with a "P" suffix.

Students will be enrolled in Purdue originated courses first, and then semester based IPSE courses. Whenever possible, Purdue evening courses will be recommended as alternatives to non-Purdue IPSE courses.

The learning center will stop accepting semester based IPSE course registrations one week prior to the beginning of each semester. This is to allow for the communication of course access information and text and material requirements between the originating institution and the students. Registrations for Purdue originated distance courses, identified by a "Y" suffix, will be accepted through the second week of the semester.

Open enrollment courses will be available to all Purdue University West Lafayette students through the second week of each semester. After the second week of each semester, open enrollment courses will be accepted only for the following groups:

  • graduating seniors
  • students needing to maintain at least 12 semester hours for financial aid
  • students studying abroad, in co-op, or serving in the military

During the fifth through the ninth weeks of the semester, students will be registered in open enrollment courses only in extenuating circumstances. In such circumstances, students must have the approval of the advisor and the head of the student's home department. For Purdue originated courses, the instructor's approval will also be required. Registrations will not be accepted for any reason after the tenth week of the semester.

Enrollment periods

In order to efficiently process enrollments and IPSE payments, the student learning center will close to student enrollments during the following periods:

  • October break
  • Winter break (the period from the end of the fall semester until the beginning of the spring semester)
  • Spring break

How to register for Distance Learning courses

  • Meet with the Advisor for guidance and approval and to select the course(s) the student wants to take by distance. The Advisor will list the course(s) on a Form 23 after verifying that the course(s) meets degree requirements. The student MUST bring a completed Form 23 signed by the Advisor and a completed ICN Registration Form in order to register for a distance learning course.
  • Obtain information from our Learning Center staff about the distance course(s); how it will be delivered, who will contact the student, how to purchase books, etc.
  • Listen carefully as the Learning Center staff registers you for the course(s).
  • Check SSINFO 24 hours later to verify your registration.
  • Watch for confirmation from the originating institution. The originating institution will contact you via e-mail or regular mail.

Drops and Withdrawals

Purdue students are subject to Purdue drop and withdrawal policies. Students MUST NOT drop distance learning courses through Advisors, the Office of the Bursar, or SSINFO. All drop forms MUST be processed through the Learning Center to assure proper handling of the student’s Purdue record and to deactivate at the participating institution. Improper withdrawal could affect fees and grades. The student may check with the Learning Center for drop dates.

Exams and Proctoring Information

The Learning Center provides proctored testing for those distance learning courses requiring a proctor. You must request your exam from the originating institution offering your course at least 48-72 hours ahead of time. Students living outside the area may arrange for exam proctoring at other Learning Centers or with approved proctors. Please list the following when completing requested Proctor Information Form: Joetta Burrous, Statewide Coordinator for CommunityLearning Centers, 128 Memorial Mall, STEW G-34, West Lafayette IN 47907 jburrous@purdue.edu; 765-496-3338.

Contact Marta Read at distancelearning@purdue.edu 48 hours (not including weekends) prior to the date and time you want to take the exam. Exams are given during the hours of 8:30 a.m. - 3 p.m., Monday through Friday. Other arrangements can be made if necessary. Please bring one form of photo ID.

**All lessons and examinations must be the sole work of the student. Lessons may be discussed with others, but the actual responses on lessons and exams must be the student’s own work.**

Grades

Because participating institutions submit grades to our Learning Center based on their semester schedules, there may be some delay in receiving and posting grades to your academic record. Grades are typically posted to SSINFO within 24-48 hours of the time they are received by Purdue. Until your final grades is recorded, the course will show an "I" (Incomplete). You are subject to Purdue policy concerning incomplete grades becoming "IF" grades. Check with the Advisor or the Learning Center staff for these dates each semester. Questions regarding grades should be directed to Janie Gaines at (765) 496-3337 or jgaines@purdue.edu. Be sure; never assume!

Candidates for Graduation

You may participate in commencement prior to removal of the incomplete notation. Candidates for Spring graduation MUST have completed all course work by May 23,2008, for a May degree posting. If work is not completed by June 3, 2008, you will have to register to “Degree Only” during Summer session and have an August degree posted.

Tuition and Fees

A 100% refund may be granted when a course is dropped before the start date. Other refunds may be issued during weeks 1-2 (80%); 3-4 (60%); 5-6 (40%) of a 16-week semester. Refunds are prorated for courses meeting other than 16 weeks. Refunds are NOT issued for drops after the sixth week.
