Research Focus:
Basic Biomedical:
Research will concentrate on the mechanism underlying cell death in ischemia; the role of genes that regulate cell death in ischemia in brain trauma and novel gene therapies.
Applied Clinical:

Health Services:
Research will investigate barriers to care in the elderly in an effort to determine why therapies that are known to be effective are not uniformly applied.

Education Focus:
The education component has two elements: Clinical training for fellows in geriatric medicine, geriatric psychiatry and geriatric neurology; trainees in allied health sciences including audiology and speech language pathology nursing, occupational therapy, physical therapy, psychology and pharmacology will be provided in context with clinical demonstration projects and other geriatric clinical resources at the Pittsburgh VAHCS; and Continuing Medical Education for physicians and other trainees; ongoing staff education and training; public symposia, printed materials and the opportunity for continued medical eduation through the GRECC website.

Clinical Focus:
The Clinical program has two principal objectives: To optimize the home-based care of post-stroke elderly patients through development and evaluation of multidisciplinary home-based primary care approach ; and to coordinate the hospital-based acute care, long term care, outpatient and home-based care through development of the model Geriatric Continuity of Care (GCCP) Program.
