IT Workforce Assessment and Development

IT workforce planning and development is a high priority for the Department of Commerce.  The rate of change in information technology, Congressionally mandated requirements, and other Federal policies all contribute to a need for a dynamic approach to the continued development of our IT workforce.  As Commerce continues to streamline IT resources, resulting in more enterprise-wide programs, we must also ensure that our IT workforce remains highly competent and well versed in critical IT skills.  To achieve its IT workforce objectives, Commerce works in close cooperation with OPM, OMB, GSA, the Federal CIO Council's IT Workforce Committee, academia, and many private sector organizations in the IT industry.  These partnerships enhance IT service delivery by ensuring that Commerce possesses the necessaary tools to enable the recruitment, retention, and development of a skilled IT workforce.  These tools include the following:
