It's never been colder in Cedar Rapids

Temperatures plunged to record levels in the Cedar Rapids area, as indicated by this bank sign in Marion this morning, Thursday, Jan. 15, 2009. The mercury dropped to minus 29 at 7:51 a.m. in Cedar Rapids, the coldest ever recorded in the city, according to the National Weather Service. Even colder temperatures are a possibility tonight.

Colder than the Twin Cities. Colder than Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Colder than Fargo. Colder than Fairbanks or even Point Barrow, Alaska.

That’s how cold it was this morning n Cedar Rapids — where it was colder than it’s ever been in recorded weather history.

At 7:51 a.m., the temperature dipped to minus 29, according to the National Weather Service.

Friday morning “will probably be as cold or colder than (Thursday) morning,” said Dan Ferry, metorologist at the weather service’s Davenport office.

The wind chill was 51 degrees below zero around 5 a.m. this morning, leading the Weather Service to use terms like “dangerous” and “life-threatening.”

A wind chill warning is in effect until noon Friday.

A 93-year-old record low was tied Wednesday, when the actual temperature reached minus 22 just before midnight, according to the weather service.

High temperatures around Cedar Rapids will be well below zero — probably around minus 10 and a few degrees colder outside the city.

Iowa City was at minus 21 this morning.

It’s not known if that is a record. The National Weather Service only tracks record temperatures for sites where data has been charted for more than 50 years, and Iowa City has not reached that point.

“The main point for today is that, no matter where you are, it’s dangerously cold out there,” meteorologist Andy Ervin said.

Relief is in sight, as temperatures in the low 30s are forecast for next week. However, Ervin said actual temperatures won’t creep above zero again until daytime on Friday.

A 93-year-old record low was tied Wednesday, when the actual temperature reached minus 22 just before midnight, according to the weather service. A record low will be set today, as well. It dipped to minus 26 this morning, breaking the 1994 record of minus 23.

KCRG-TV9's Joe Winters said in a posting to Twitter today that the low in Cedar Rapids this morning was minus 29 degrees. He also pointed out that the low this morning at the South Pole was minus 18 degrees, and minus 16 at the North Pole.

Here is the list of closings and delays

"That may or may not be the low for today," said Andy Ervin, a meteorologist with the weather service in Davenport.

High temperatures around Cedar Rapids will be well below zero today, Ervin said. Expect minus 10 in the city and few degrees colder outside the city.

You are ABSOLUTELY correct. There are some...umm...truly nimble minds around here who don't know the difference between weather and climate. (Matt, do your homework!)

 Title:  Matt... get a clue

Global warming isn't about the weather at your parents house, it's about GLOBAL weather patterns that affect LOCAL weather. The changes to the jet stream and ocean currents are changing the length and severity of weather around the world... some areas experiencing heat and drought, other areas experiencing drops in temperature. If you'd bother watching or reading something on the subject, you'd quit embarrassing yourself with idiotic rants here!

Matt - it's been "dangerously cold" for, um, a day now. Don't you think you should wait a little on your rant? What's the problem with people caring about the environment, anyway? Get a life...

ok. take your best shot. someone, ANYONE come out and tell me again about the obvious MYTH that is Global Warming. anyone aat all. Where is Al Gore? Where is Leonardo Decrapio? where are the liberals and environmentalists that would have you beleive the sky is falling? Where are the supposed scientists that were telling us all this b-u-l-l-s-h-i-t about how the ice caps were melting and it was going to be disasterous? WHERE ARE THEY??? my parents have a driveway that needs to be shoveled out. i suppose you won't mind coming out and telling us the 'warm' stories of global warming while you go work a shovel in your shorts...since the Earth is warming so much.
.
ever notice how Al & Decrapio turn into moles this time of year?

Title:  C.R. Record Temps. Are Merely Guilt by Association!

My conservative and quite accurate thermometer reading of minus 15.5 could have actually been the C.R. record since official statistics are kept for the open spaces of the airport, not the relative heat island of the town.
