Office of Naval Research to Showcase Next-Generation Marine Vehicle Technology Demonstrator at New York Fleet Week Released: 5/12/2008 Arlington, Va.—The Office of Naval Research will be showcasing a variety of revolutionary technologies destined for today’s and tomorrow’s Sailors and Marines at this year’s Fleet Week in New York, from May 21-26. In addition to new vehicles and other technologies that will be on display at Pier 88, the new Combat Tactical Vehicle (CTV) variant of the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV) family of vehicles will be available for display. The JLTV is a joint Army, Marine, and Special Operations Command program to replace the current HMMWV vehicle in use by the U.S. military. The CTV is the combat variant, built under contract by the Office of Naval Research at the Nevada Automotive Test Center in Carson City, Nevada, as a technology demonstrator. The CTV takes advantage of lessons learned from combat experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan and incorporates a number of design features that make it better able to resist improvised explosive devices.

Office of Naval Research to Co-Sponsor Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Demonstration Released: 4/28/2008 ARLINGTON, VA - A major exercise and demonstration of unmanned autonomous undersea vehicles (AUVs) will take place in Narragansett Bay from May 12-23, 2008 during AUVfest 2008. ManTech Program Is Helping to Reduce Per-Unit Cost of Virginia-Class Subs Released: 4/11/2008
The Navy’s ManTech office, managed by the Office of Naval Research, is continuing to support the Virginia Class Program Office in its efforts to reach its cost reduction goals as mandated by the Chief of Naval Operations. The Navy ManTech program works with defense contractors, the Naval Research Enterprise, Navy acquisition program offices, and academia to develop improved processes and equipment. Project success is measured by implementation of these technologies on the factory floor and rapid transition to the fleet to support Navy warfighters. Beginning last fiscal year, a concerted effort to prioritize cost-reduction Virginia-class ManTech projects was made. Since this refocused start, seven of the affordability focused projects have completed and are in some phase of implementation. Currently, there are more than 60 different Navy ManTech projects focused on Virginia-class manufacturing technology priorities.
DoD to Award $15.7 Million for Science and Engineering Research Released: 3/26/2008 The Department of Defense announced today that it plans to award $15.7 million to 24 academic institutions in 18 states to perform research in science and engineering, under the fiscal 2008 Defense Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (DEPSCoR). The Office of Naval Research´s portion of that money, $5.3 million, will go to researchers at 11 academic institutions in 10 states.
ONR’s Advanced Electric Ship Demonstrator Will Test Revolutionary Rimjet Propulsion System Released: 3/18/2008 Arlington, Va. — Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC) returned the Navy´s Advanced Electric Ship Demonstrator—or Sea Jet—with a new modified stern to the Office of Naval Research (ONR) on March 14, 2008. Sea Jet now incorporates the Rimjet propulsor, plus associated mechanical and electrical systems. The Advanced Electric Ship Demonstrator was accepted at the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division, Acoustic Research Detachment (NSWCC-ARD) in Bayview, Idaho. NSWCCD-ARD, located on the shores of Lake Pond Oreille, is now taking Sea Jet through a series of hydrodynamic, electromagnetic, and acoustic testing.

Sea Fighter Contributes to Rescue of Downed Air Force Pilot Released: 2/20/2008 Two F-15 aircraft from Eglin Air Force Base collided in mid-air on 20 February 2008 during a training mission over Gulf of Mexico waters south of Tyndall Air Force Base. Both pilots were rescued from the Gulf, but one later died, officials said. The F-15C Eagles collided just before 2 p.m. some 77 miles southeast of Eglin. The jets were part of Eglin´s 33rd Fighter Wing.

Navy Scientist Dr. Bhakta Rath Elected to National Academy of Engineering Released: 2/19/2008 Washington, D.C. – Dr. Bhakta Rath, Associate Director of Research and Head of the Materials Science and Component Technology Directorate at the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), has been elected to the National Academy of Engineering. Office of Naval Research Spearheads Development of New All-Composite Mark V.1 Patrol Boat Released: 1/17/2008 Arlington, Va.--Naval special forces units have to work in extreme—and more often than not, unfriendly—environments. But one of the most persistent problems they face comes when they´re just trying to get to or leave the battlefield—and it isn´t from flying bullets. The 82-foot-long Mark V aluminum patrol boat—a primary mode of transport for Navy SEALs—has long been known as a rough ride by those who use it. Personnel have been known to get everything from bruises to back and foot injuries as the vessel roars along at speeds in excess of 50 knots.

Infantry Immersion Trainer Begins Training Marines in a Virtual Environment Released: 12/18/2007 The Office of Naval Research (ONR) TechSolutions program has transformed a former tomato packing plant on Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Calif., into a state-of-the-art Infantry Immersion Trainer (IIT) prototype. Launched in November 2007 as a technology demonstrator, the IIT began real training of Marines before all of the facility´s high-tech equipment was even fully operational.
ONR Presents Bowen Award for Composite Materials Test Method Released: 11/28/2007 Arlington, VA—On November 27, the U.S. Office of Naval Research (ONR) honored two engineers who patented a nondestructive method for detecting flaws and anomalies in composite materials. Rear Admiral William E. Landay, Chief of Naval Research, presented the 2006 Vice Admiral Harold G. Bowen Award to Dr. Colin P. Ratcliffe and Dr. Roger M. Unmanned Vehicles Take the Man Out Of the Minefield Released: 6/21/2007 As festivals go, AUVFest 2007 was more than a little unusual. "On a good day, you won´t see much of anything," said Phil Bernstein, the event manager. The two-week event at the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) in Panama City, Florida, which wrapped up June 14, was a hotbed of activity, but most of it was underwater. The seventh such event that the Office of Naval Research has sponsored, AUVFest 2007 was a chance for developers of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), tracking systems, unmanned aerial and land vehicles, and computer modeling systems to come together and show their colleagues what they could do. The first AUVFest was in 1997, but this is the first year that the NSWC Panama City has hosted the event.

New Virtual Immersive Trainer Will Help Make Marines and Sailors of the Future Released: 4/5/2007 Arlington, Va.—Chief of Naval Research Rear Admiral William E. Superconductor Images Make the Cover of Science Released: 3/16/2007 Arlington, Virginia – Researchers funded by the Office of Naval Research have developed an imaging technique that gives them a direct view of electron distribution in superconducting layered copper oxide ceramics. Examples of these images appear on the cover of the March 9 issue of Science, and their research is published in this issue. The images, which map the quantum mechanical probability of adding or removing electrons at specific positions and energies, provide an important clue to solving the 20-year-old puzzle of how electrons can travel so freely through these so-called "high temperature superconductors."
ONR Sponsors Award-Winning Nanotechnology Researchers Released: 1/9/2007 Arlington, Va.— Two nanotechnology researchers whose work is sponsored by the U.S. Office of Naval Research (ONR) are among Scientific American´s SA-50, a list of 50 American technology and policy leaders for 2006. A third ONR-funded nanotechnology investigator has earned a 2006 TR35 Young Innovator award from MIT´s Technology Review. Each year, this publication´s editors honor 35 researchers under the age of 35 whose work they deem "most exciting."

Wineland of the National Institute of Standards and Technology, an ONR grantee who has been named as one of the Scientific American 50 for 2006. Keel Laid for Revolutionary Dual-Use Catamaran Vessel, M/V Susitna Released: 8/28/2006 Arlington, Va.— On August 24, 2006, onlookers gathered at the shipyard of Alaska Ship & Drydock Inc. in Ketchikan, Alaska, to witness the keel laying of what will be a very unusual and versatile ship.
Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), the vessel´s sponsor, performed the honors as she welded her name onto the keel of the M/V Susitna, a twin-hulled catamaran ferry that is being funded jointly by the Office of Naval Research (ONR) and Alaska´s Matunuska Susitna (Mat/Su) Borough. Attendees also included ONR´s Chief of Naval Research RAdm. William E. Landay, Mat/Su Borough Mayor Tim Anderson, as well as State of Alaska and Ketchikan officials and the management team for the Susitna program.
ONR Supports Monterey Bay 2006 Experiment Released: 8/23/2006 Like schools of robot fish, dozens of undersea gliders and other robotic undersea vehicles have been cruising the near-shore waters of the Central California coast during the past month. These undersea robots, along with other instruments carried on ships, airplanes, satellites, buoys, and drifters, are providing oceanographers with new ways of seeing and hearing the ocean in unprecedented detail.

A FASTT First Released: 12/29/2005 Before the sun had even risen over Wallops Island, Va., on 10 December 2005, a joint Office of Naval Research/Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency vehicle achieved a world first. At an altitude of 63,000 feet, the Freeflight Atmospheric Scramjet Test Technique (FASTT) vehicle became the first air-breathing, liquid hydrocarbon fuel-powered scramjet engine to fly.

Loco for Microscopic Sea Life Released: 8/31/2005 Despite all of the elbow room the open ocean offers miniscule life forms such as phytoplankton, bacteria, and viruses, these creatures sometimes converge into patches called “thin layers.” The centimeter- to meter-thick layers have densities as great as 1,000 times that of the water around them and can have profound effects on the way light and sound move through the water.
