Becoming independent

Girl smiling with her head on her handsThe truth is, any change is hard. Whether you are moving from special education to mainstream classes, planning to go to college, or preparing for life on your own someday, getting started can seem scary. But there are ways to make these transitions (changes) smoother.

The first important step is to write down what you would like your goals to be, meaning, what you would like to do when you get older. If you are not sure about your goals, write down the things you like to do. This will help you when you talk to your "team," which includes your counselor, teacher, doctor, parents/guardian, and most importantly, YOU. This team will help you put a plan into action. And it is not too early to start planning now for when you are older.

What kinds of changes do I want to make?

There are many things to think about right now – school, health needs, and daily life with your family. The links below will help you with changes that are going on right now and changes you might want to make a few years from now. It is a good idea to start planning for both.
