Conservation… Our Purpose. Our Passion
Conservation…Our
Purpose. Our Passion. The purpose and passion for conservation is shared among
many. It is shared between NRCS employees and partners who help people help the
land. And it is shared by the landowners with whom we work. Our passion is
manifested through the benefits derived from stewardship of private
lands—benefits we all enjoy, such as cleaner water and air, improved soils and
abundant wildlife habitat. Learn about our stories, the stories of conservation
made possible through a shared purpose, a shared passion and a shared commitment
to conservation.

The Conservation Security Program (CSP) in the
Lower Yellowstone Watershed
Jim Squires never stops learning. He listens to audio tapes as he
drives, researches new technology on the internet, and knows the names
and phone numbers of most agricultural researchers in the West. That
lifetime of learning has paid off, both in profitable farming practices
and acceptance in Montana’s first Conservation Security Program (CSP)
sign-up.

Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP)
Calms Wind Erosion in North Central Montana
Carl and Janice Mattson run a primarily no-till wheat and durum
operation covering several thousand acres. In Carl Mattson’s view, “the
value of improving the organic matter is difficult to put a price tag
on. Once you have seen the changes in the soil, you become convinced it
is the right practice.”

To Learn!
Ortwin Bourquin stopped by the USDA field office in Columbus, Montana,
with three plants he wanted help in identifying. The next week he came
by again with a dozen more specimens. Each specimen was mounted as if
part of a presentation. When asked why he was so interested in plants,
Mr. Bourquin replied robustly in his unique South African accent, "To
learn!"
