  Hunting
Continued . . .

Hunting is one of six priority public uses identified by Congress in the National Wildlife Refuge System Improvement Act of 1997. As part of a national heritage of hunting, Nisqually refuge will be managed to provide a quality waterfowl hunt program. The program will be consistent with waterfowl hunting regulations on adjacent State lands, with a clear boundary created and enforced to eliminate confusion for visitors.

During the hunting season, almost 200 acres of the refuge will be open to a 7-day/week, 25-shell limit hunt. Including the State-managed lands, over 800 acres will be available for waterfowl hunting. Improved sanctuary areas will also result from these changes, since waterfowl hunting will be discontinued in other areas.

Before the refuge can begin a waterfowl hunt program, however, a step-down management plan must be completed and regulations published in the Federal Register. These steps are expected to take 2-3 years to complete. Until then, the refuge remains closed to hunting.
