Switzerland intensifies its aid

To help cope with the humanitarian emergency the FDFA has decided to allocate an additional SFr 3 million in funding for humanitarian aid organisations. Furthermore the Department is preparing to send an emergency humanitarian relief mission to Gaza.

Central Aasia Project Briefing
Health despite poverty - a SDC-sponsored project changes people's perspective
The poorest country in Central Asia, Tajikistan is no longer able to maintain a viable healthcare infrastructure for its seven million inhabitants. Illnesses such as diarrhoea and iron deficiency anaemia are very common. The people, especially those in more remote areas, live in abject poverty and are basically on their own. An SDC-funded project seeks to improve their plight by teaching them how to take responsibility for their own health: many illnesses could be avoided if people understood the root causes and how to go about preventing the illnesses.

Message on the Continuation of Assistance to Developing Countries
Swiss Official Development Assistance set to reach 0.5% of Gross National Income
Switzerland will become more generous in providing development assistance. On Tuesday, 2 December 2008, the National Council granted a new credit supplementary to the CHF 5.3 billion already earmarked for the years 2009 through 2012 in the Message on the Continuation of Assistance to Developing Countries. The objective is to reach 0.5% of GNI by the year 2015.
