Background
CFSAN currently has one chartered advisory committee, the FDA Food
Advisory Committee. This is a technical and scientific committee that
advises the Center and Agency on emerging food safety, food science,
and nutrition issues. The committee consists of 18 standing members with
expertise in the physical sciences, biological and life sciences, food
science, risk assessment, or other relevant scientific and technical
disciplines. Most members are drawn from academia, government, and
professional societies. Some technically qualified members also
represent consumer and industry interests. As necessary, temporary
members are also appointed to provide additional expertise for
consideration of specific issues.
Toll Free Number
FDA has established an 800-number telephone voicemail system to provide
information to the public about all of its advisory committees.
Callers are first asked to select the Agency Center (Drugs,
Foods, Medical Devices, etc.), and then the particular advisory
committee of interest. The information available is primarily about planned
meetings of the various committees. Some of the Agency's Centers provide
information on committee vacancies and on obtaining written materials, e.g.,
meeting minutes.
The advisory committee voicemail system may be accessed by dialing
800-741-8138. In the Washington, DC, USA, area the number is 301-443-0572.
Callers may by-pass introductory information and proceed directly to
information about meetings of the committee of interest by entering
a five-digit code when prompted. The codes are published
with each Federal Register meeting announcement. The 10-digit code for
information about future meetings of the Food Advisory Committee
is 3014510564.
