Golden Gate National Recreational Area
Alcatraz Overnight Program

Each year, the Golden Gate National Recreation Area hosts approximately 18 groups for overnight camping inside the historic cell house. We receive over 200 applications so we do a random drawing to select groups to participate. If you are interested, please send an e-mail to Mark Grupé or a letter to Alcatraz Overnight Program, Special Park Uses, Golden Gate National Recreation Area, Bldg. 201 Fort Mason, San Francisco, CA 94123 during the month of November.

  • Cost: $1,500
  • Maximum attendance: 35, of whom 5 must be adults over 21
  • Minimum age of participants: 9 years

All overnights are on Saturday nights, with occasional exceptions made for those with specific accomodation needs. Due to high demand, we are unable to accommodate requests for particular dates, so all dates are assigned at random. If your group cannot make the date assigned, you will need to re-apply the next year.
