Applied Science

The Freshwater Institute has an international reputation for its innovative technologies. As a premier research organization, scientists here are frequently asked to share their knowledge beyond the publication of academic research reports. The Freshwater Institute staff responds with vigor. In a typical year there are workshops, farm visits, technical assistance consultations, facility tours, and numerous requests for information. Institute scientists also publish timely popular press articles and travel widely to consult with businesses and government agencies, and make professional presentations. Through such means, the Institute spreads the benefits of its research nationally and globally, far beyond its Appalachian campus. The result is a rapid technology transfer from research to on-the-ground application, in both established operations and rural start-up businesses.
