Man arrested in possible hate crime on Capitol Hill

By HECTOR CASTRO
P-I REPORTER

Seattle police arrested a man Thursday night after he tried to assault a woman outside a Capitol Hill business, apparently because he thought she was a lesbian.

Officers were called around 9:45 p.m. after witnesses reported a man chasing a woman in the 100 block of Broadway Avenue East.

Patrol officers soon found the man, the woman and several witnesses.

According to a police report of the incident, the woman told officers that she was taking a cigarette break from her job and was standing outside with a friend when the man approached her and made threatening statements that referred to her sexual orientation.

The man then tried to assault the woman, yelling, "I'll kill you! I'm going to hurt you, lesbian!"

The woman ran from the man, telling him several times to stay away from her and screaming for help as the man gave chase.

Officers arrived and were able to detain the man. He was arrested and booked into the King County Jail for investigation of malicious harassment, the state's hate crime law.

The suspect has been arrested several times in the past year, according to jail records, including arrests for making bomb threats, animal cruelty and assault. He was most recently released from jail on Dec. 30.
