Women’s International Science Collaboration

Purpose: To increase the participation of women in international scientific research. WISC awards small travel grants to U.S. scientists to plan and design new collaborations with colleagues in Central/Eastern and Western Europe, the Newly Independent States of the former Soviet Union, Near East, Middle East, Africa, the Americas, Pacific, and Asia. These activities are expected to lead to full research proposals.
Eligibility: U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the U.S. Men and women scientists who have their Ph.D.s or equivalent research experience are eligible to apply. Applications from male co-PIs must be accompanied by an application from a female co-PI as part of a U.S. research team, except as noted below for the Americas. Ph.D. candidates are also eligible to apply, if they will be conducting research in an established Ph.D. program in the U.S. Government employees can only apply if they also are affiliated with another institution eligible to receive NSF grants (e.g., an adjunct professorship at a university).
Financial Provisions: $4,000 or $5,000 (depending on region), for travel and living support for a U.S. scientist to visit a partner country. When appropriate, an additional grant of up to $4,000 or $5,000 may be made to an American co-PI for the same purpose. The grant does not cover salary or institutional expenses (e.g., overhead). Grant funds can also be used to cover material and supplies needed during the stay. With the approval of AAAS administrators, funds can be used to support a second visit to the partner country or for a foreign partner to travel to the U.S. when such a visit is deemed necessary. The grants are not to be used for the sole purpose of attending conferences or workshops or teaching or training.

Burroughs Wellcome Fund Postdoctoral Fellowship in Tropical Infectious Diseases

Purpose: To stimulate or sustain interest in research in tropical infectious diseases, to encourage individuals who are planning on a career in infectious disease research relevant to tropical or developing areas of the world.
Eligibility: Applications will be considered from any individual with an academic appointment of fellow who proposes to perform research in tropical infectious diseases (this award is not meant for students, pre-doctoral candidates, or faculty). Preference will be given to North American clinician-scientists enrolled in (or accepted by) an American Board of Internal Medicine-approved infectious disease fellowship program or a pediatric infectious disease training program approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) in collaboration with the Residency Review Committee for Pediatrics in the U.S., and those accredited through the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC).

Purpose: To promote cooperative agriculture research between postdoctoral Fellows from the United States or Israel to provide BARD with input into new research areas and to enhance scientific competence in these areas. The primary objective of the BARD Postdoctoral Fellowship program is to enable young scientists to acquire new skills and techniques while becoming professionally established in the agricultural research community. The program promotes cooperative agricultural research between postdoctoral fellows from one country (the United States or Israel) and senior scientists from the other.

Post Doctoral Fellowship Program (Short Term)

Purpose: To allow foreign fellows to advance their own research within Japanese institutions while stimulating Japanese researchers and advancing research in the counterpart country.
Eligibility: Citizens or permanent residents of the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Sweden, the UK, Italy, Finland and other European Union Countries (as of 1 April 2006). Applicants must have obtained a PhD when the fellowship goes into effect or within six years prior to April 2 of the fellowship award year or be enrolled in a doctoral course and be scheduled to receive the PhD within two years. Scientists who are U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents may apply via the Fogarty International Center. Non- U.S. citizens/permanent residents that are a citizen of one the other eligible countries can apply via FIC if they have completed a Masters or PhD at a qualifying U.S. university/institute and upon completion of this course have at least 3 continuous years of high-level research at a university or institute in the U.S.. Invitation Fellowship Program, Short and Long Term

Purpose: To allow scientists employed at designated Japanese research institutions and laboratories to invite fellow researchers from other countries to Japan to participate in cooperative activities.
Eligibility: Citizen of a country that has diplomatic relations with Japan, or Japanese national working abroad for at least 10 years. Substantial research experience required, evidenced by status as senior scientist, university professor, or equivalent. For long term fellowships, researchers with a PhD for at least six years are also eligible to apply. In addition to applying via a Japanese host institution, applicants may contact a foreign nominating authority, such as the Fogarty International Center for U.S. citizens and permanent residents.
Financial Provisions: Host cooperation allowance of 50,000 yen. Short-Term Scientist Exchange Program

Fields of Study: Basic and clinical cancer research.
Purpose: To promote cooperative research between American and foreign scientists from lesser or under developed countries.
Eligibility: Minimum three years post doctoral experience in cancer research. Sponsors or exchangees from the U.S must be NCI-supported principal investigators (PI's), in either the intramural or extramural research programs. Foreign sponsors must be established scientists recognized in the international peer reviewed literature. Foreign candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English. Preference is given to applicants from not yet fully developed countries. Persons holding U.S. permanent resident status or any work visa are not eligible for this program.
Financial Provisions: In the case of U.S. exchange PI's, the foreign host institution covers the in-country expenses of the U.S. visitor. In the case of foreign visitors, a foreign source pays for the airfare, while OIA provides a subsistence allowance, generally the monthly equivalent of $41,700 per year (split equally by OIA and the sponsor). Cost sharing of the subsistence allowance by the sponsoring American laboratory is required. The program provides health insurance coverage for the awardee only and does not cover pre-existing conditions.

Purpose: To enhance international collaborative research on drug abuse and drug-related consequences by supporting professional visits between drug abuse researchers from any other country and U.S. NIDA-supported scientists in the most suitable locale. If the project would best be conducted outside the United States, NIDA grantees should apply for a USDISCA award to visit their partner's home country.
