The Food and Drug Administration's Advisory Committee Oversight and Management Staff (ACOMS) located in the Office of the Commissioner works in close collaboration with all FDA staff to provide consistency in the development, implementation, and operational use of Federal Advisory Committee statutes, regulations, guidances, and policies.
The advisory committee management function was created due to the establishment of the Federal Advisory Committee Act (FACA) (Public Law 92-463). ACOMS serves as the liaison between the Department of Health and Human Service's Office of the Secretary and Committee Management Office, and all FDA advisory committee support staff, and other organizations/offices within FDA. ACOMS ensures that all FDA advisory committee management activities are consistent with the provisions of FACA, Departmental policies, and related statutes and regulations.
Currently, there are 31 standing FDA advisory committees (25 nonstatutory and 6 statutory).
Each advisory committee is assigned a Designated Federal Officer (DFO) who is responsible for the overall administrative management of the committee.
