Roots

Roots: This pool is required by a number of registries and may account for a fair sized pool of carbon. Roots are often divided in to coarse (>2mm) and fine (<2mm). Although in reality both these pools are difficult to measure in the field, coarse roots have been found to be present in a relative constant ratio to above ground biomass (4 part:1 part) so can be easily estimate by using higher quality aboveground tree biomass estimates. Fine roots are typically a much smaller carbon pool and can be quite difficult to quantify due to large spatial variability.
