NEW STAMP HONORS THE FIRST COMPREHENSIVE NATIONAL FOOD AND DRUG LAW

On January 15, 1998, the U.S. Postal Service will unveil a new stamp commemorating the Pure Food and Drugs Act of 1906 -- the first comprehensive federal law prohibiting the interstate commerce of adulterated or mislabeled foods and drugs. This stamp is one of a series of 150 stamps to be issued over the next two years to honor major historical events of the 20th Century.

The Pure Food and Drugs Act of 1906 evolved from concerns about product safety and consumer rights that emerged during the early part of this century. Although subsequent laws added many of the consumer protections we enjoy today, the Pure Food and Drugs Act served as the foundation for these safeguards, and marks the birth of the modern Food and Drug Administration.

The stamp will be formally unveiled in a public ceremony at Hook's American Drug Store Museum in Indianapolis, Ind., at 11:00 a.m. on January 15. The Hook's Museum, located at 1180 East 38th Street in Indianapolis, is dedicated to the documentation, preservation, and interpretation of the history of American pharmacy.
