In January 1997, the President announced a budget request to initiate and expand science based food safety activities to improve the safety of the nations food supply. Funding was directed toward an early warning system for foodborne illness, increasing seafood inspections, and expansion of food safety research, training, and education with the goal of reducing the incidence of foodborne illness to the greatest extent feasible. The intent of the initiative is to take preventive measures to reduce the risk of illness and especially focus on those areas where hazards present the greatest risk. This initiative promotes collaboration between public and private sectors and interagency coordination to ensure a safe food supply.
The Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) is participating in the President's Food Safety Initiative (FSI) in a number of ways. Currently, CVM contributes to the Surveillance, Research and Educational activities of the Food Safety Initiative (FSI).
-
Surveillance -- CVM has developed and coordinated the National Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System (NARMS) (originally known as the National Antimicrobial Susceptibility Monitoring Program) a collaboration between FDA, the United States Department of Agriculture/Agricultural Research Service (USDA), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). NARMS monitors shifts in susceptibility to 17 antimicrobial drugs of zoonotic enteric organisms from veterinary and human sources.
-
Research -- CVM is funding cooperative agreements to study the microbiological hazards associated with the food animal production environment, which includes animal feeds.
- Education -- CVM's FSI educational initiatives focused on prudent and judicious drug use practices. CVM has also conducted risk assessments to better quantify uncertainties for development of scientifically sound priorities and policy.
CVM's Fiscal Year 1999 activities are summarized in the FSI FY 99 Annual Accomplishments Report . Our involvement in international, domestic, intra-agency, and educational programs is detailed in this report.
