Dr. Shykind been involved in these issues since the recognition of the effect of chlorofluorocarbon (CFC's) damage to stratospheric ozone 1972, and has participated in the development of the national and international regulations until his retirement in 1995. Along with the scientific investigations, he will discuss the related effects of CFC's, other compounds, and air-sea interactions on the potential changes in global weather patterns.
His first position was with the Office of Science and Technology in the areas of ocean engineering, data collection and coordination of 23 agencies oceanographic programs. His last position, which he held for 23 years, was technical/science advisor to various offices in the U.S. Department of Commerce. During this period he was responsible for the analysis of all regulations and legislation affecting domestic industry. Much of this work resulted in major modifications to the regulations so that industry could comply in a more economic fashion. During this time he served on a number of interagency committees dealing with significant environmental regulations on such substances as fluorocarbons, asbestos, PCB's and other toxic substances and worked with Congress on the development of the Clean Air, Toxic Substances and Water Pollution legislation. He was member of the U.S. delegation to the international deliberations on the control of ozone depleting compounds and global warming and was working on global warming problems in conjunction with the IPCC.
Dr. Shykind retired from the Federal government at the end of June 1994. He is currently a consultant to aerosol manufacturers on proposed regulations for chemical components related to global warming issues.

From College Park/Beltsville: Take Rt. 1 to Powder Mill Rd. East. Follow Powder Mill Rd. through USDA. Once you pass the BW Parkway go 1.9 miles. Turn right into Visitor Center entrance (Scarlet Tanager Loop). Go 1.4 miles to Visitor Center Parking area.
Metro: The nearest Metro Station is Greenbelt (The north end of the Green line). Arrangements can be made in advance for pick up from the station.
