Dr. Graham W. Smith

About the Speaker: Dr. Smith is Research Manager for the Quantitative and Migratory Research Groups and the Bird Banding Laboratory at Patuxent Wildlife Research Center. He received his Ph.D. from Utah State in Fisheries and Wildlife. Dr. Smith is very interested in population ecology, quantitative methods, waterfowl biology, and harvest management, avian and mammalian life history strategies.

Topic: Dr. Smith will give us a short presentation on migratory birds and quantitative methods.

Dr. Marshall Howe

About the Speaker: Dr. Howe is Research Manager for the Inventory and Monitoring Program and is involved in the development of the Center's role in long-term population monitoring of birds, amphibians, and other taxa, including related database management and web-delivery of information. Dr. Howe is interested in population monitoring, behavioral ecology, shorebird ecology, and conservation of North American birds.

Topic: Dr. Howe will give us a short presentation on Status and Trends and Museum Science.

Directions to PWRC, Laurel MD

From Washington, D.C.: Take Baltimore/Washington Parkway (Route 295) North, to Powder Mill Road-Beltsville exit. Turn right (east) onto Powder Mill Road and stay on Powder Mill Road (approx. 2 miles) until you reach the intersection of Route197 and Powder Mill (stoplight). The main gate of Patuxent is straight ahead. Follow entry road into Patuxent.

From Baltimore, MD: Take Baltimore/Washington Parkway (Route 295) South to Laurel exit, Route 197. Turn left on Route 197. Follow 197 approximately 1 1/2 miles to main gate on left (opposite intersection with Powder Mill Road (stoplight)). Follow entry road into Patuxent. From Annapolis, MD: Take US 50/US 301 West and go approximately 12.5 miles to Exit 11. Take the Collington Rd/MD-197N exit (Exit 11) and bear right. Proceed 8.7 miles to Powder Mill Road intersection (stoplight) and make a right hand turn into the main gate. Follow entry road into Patuxent.

Directions on Campus: Follow main road in and bear to the right at the first intersection. Follow the roadway past the Snowden Mansion and past the next building (Nelson Laboratory).

Parking on Campus: A large parking lot is to the right of the Gabrielson Laboratory Building. Additional parking, closer to the building is available by continuing to the stop sign and turn left. Go about 100 yards. Gabrielson is on the left. Park in the spaces provided on the semi-circular drive. There is limited parking available in front of the Gabrielson Building. Only those who are transporting items into the building should use this site.

Conference Room: Enter the building through the front and walk up the steps to the main lobby. The conference room is on the second floor on the left end of the building (closet to the large parking lot). The second floor is also accessible by an elevator that is located in the lobby.

Note: Patuxent has a rural campus and is a quiet and beautiful place, far from the noise and congestion of Washington and Baltimore. Patuxent is a wonderful place to enjoy a scientific discussion and make new acquaintances. Come join Sigma Xi for an afternoon of stimulation talks and relaxation.
