Dr. Nicole LaRonde LeBlanc has been selected to participate in the inaugural Keystone Symposia Fellows Program. The program is aimed at enhancing the careers of promising underrepresented minority life scientists by providing an opportunity to shadow and participate in the development of future meeting programs at Keystone Symposia. LaRonde-LeBlanc is one of three senior post doctoral trainees and junior faculty selected this year.
Just released! a text/reference book:“Fundamentals of Powder Diffraction and Structural Characterization of Materials. Second Edition” by Vitalij K. Pecharsky and Peter Y. Zavalij
This new edition provides an in-depth introduction to the theories and applications of the powder diffraction method for structure determination. The emphasis is placed on powder diffraction data collected using conventional x-ray sources, which remain primary tools for thousands of researchers and students in their daily experimental work.
Available to readers are supplementary files, including color figures, powder diffraction data, examples, and web links. Additionally, a solutions manual is available for instructors.

Dr. Barbara Gerratana
Dr. Gerratana's most recent position was at the Johns Hopkins University, where she was a postdoctoral research associate. In her research at UMD, she uses a variety of enzymological techniques, as well as chemical and molecular biological tools, to develop a detailed understanding of the reaction mechanisms of enzymes involved in metabolism of NAD+ and in the biosynthesis of pyrrolo[1,4]benzodiazepines (PBDs), a class of potent antitumor antibiotics. Dr. Gerratana received her PhD in Biochemistry from University of Wisconsin-Madison

Dr. John Fourkas
Dr. Fourkas is the first Millard Alexander Professor of chemistry. Dr. Fourkas has amassed a distinguished record focused in nanoscience and ultrafast nonlinear spectroscopy at Boston College before coming to Maryland. He has been the recipient of a Beckman Young Investigator Award, an Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship, the Camille & Henry Dreyfus Foundation's New Faculty Award and Teacher-Scholar Award, the Research Corporation Cottrell Scholar Award, and an NSF CAREER Award. He is also a Senior Editor for the Journal of Physical Chemistry. Dr. Fourkas received his PhD from Stanford University and did postdoctoral work at University of Texas at Austin and at MIT.

Dr. Nathan L. Drake, head of the university's chemistry department from 1940 until his death in 1959, joined the faculty at the University of Maryland as professor of industrial chemistry in 1926 and became professor of organic chemistry two years later.  He instituted the Institute for Molecular Physics at Maryland in 1950, and he edited Volumes 21 and 24 of Organic Synthesis.
