Mother's Day

“Angelique and Child” by Edna Hibel

The celebration of Mother's Day was inspired by women's movements to improve environmental and community conditions mothers faced during Civil War times. It also has origins in peace advocacy movements appealing to women after the Franco-Prussian War. Read about the history of Mother's Day.

This year we have the special opportunity to showcase the extraordinary art of one of this year’s 2008 Honorees, Edna Hibel, whose world-acclaimed art often features cultural images of mother and child throughout the world.
