FN93-11 FDA RETAIL SEAFOOD WORKSHOP 07/07/93

FDA RETAIL SEAFOOD WORKSHOP A SUCCESS

A full week of technical training for FDA Regional Food
Specialists and Headquarters personnel was provided by the
FDA Seattle District and Seafood Products Research Center
(SPRC) personnel during the week of June 7, 1993. A total
of 29 FDA, 1 State, and 2 Local regulatory agency personnel
attended the workshop conducted by experts.

The purpose of the workshop was two-fold:

          1. To improve the awareness and understanding of the
FDA Regional Food Specialists and Headquarters
staff, of seafood and fish and fishery products.

          2. To provide the Specialists with technical and
informational handouts which they can use to
train, inform, update, and use in working with
states and local regulatory agencies in the review
and improvement of those jurisdictional programs.

The majority of the technical presentations were conducted
by SPRC or Seattle District scientists or investigative
staff. Subject areas of presentations ranged from defining
the illnesses and hazards of products to microbiological,
chemical, and physical contaminants to updates regarding
viruses, toxins, parasites, DNA "fingerprinting", to
shellfish issues (see Workshop agenda that follows this
narrative). A comprehensive field visit to the world famous
Pike Street Market was also conducted.

The success of this workshop was due to the collective
effort of the organizers. Much of the workshop was
coordinated by the District Science Director John Wiskerchen
and Director Dr. Marleen Wekell, SPRC (Seattle), their staff
personnel, and the Pacific Region, FDA. Planning,
organization, and funding were coordinated by several office
components of the Office of Regulatory Affairs, and the
Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, FDA.

Evaluation forms from 24 of 32 participants determined the
workshop a true success. The majority of the persons
filling out the evaluation form stated that they wouldn't
have changed a thing on the agenda if they had done it
     themselves.

The new perspectives and tools learned will be blended with
the evolving FDA HACCP program in order to construct the
most up-to-date program for delivery to states and locals at
a future date, most likely through similar type workshops.

Should you have any questions regarding the workshop,
contact Larry Edwards of FDA at (202) 205-8140.
