Blue Hills Trailside Museum

The Blue Hills Trailside Museum is a small natural history museum situated at the base of Great Blue Hill, owned by the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) and managed by Mass Audubon. It is the gateway to the 7000 acre Blue Hills Reservation. The museum features displays using native, non-releasable animals and offers a variety of educational programs.

Education Coordinator
Location: Milton, MA

  • Oversee and schedule all educational programs including weekend programs, school programs, group programs, workshops, scout programs, public programs, special events and summer camp.

  • Teach up to 10% of the educational programs.

  • Coordinate effective marketing strategies, promotional materials and publicity for all programs and events.

  • Oversee program staff and volunteers.

  • Develop new educational programs.

  • Strengthen existing partnerships with local schools and create new ones through networking and cooperative projects.

  • Exercise cultural competency at all levels by making ongoing efforts to engage diverse individuals, groups, and communities.


Level of Supervision

Work is performed under limited supervision.
Provide supervision and guidance to other staff, temporary seasonal staff, or volunteers.

Scope of Responsibility

Plan, market, and implement varied educational programs in conjunction with other staff or individually as appropriate. Has responsibility for developing and tracking budgets.

Teambuilding

Has responsibility for building a well-trained team of camp counselors and part-time educators.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor‘s degree in environmental, biological or natural sciences, environmental education, interpretation, natural resources, or resources management and three years of experience in environmental education/interpretive programming and one year of supervisory experience and budget management.

  • Applicants must possess strong communication and organizational skills, be able to manage multiple tasks concurrently, and adjust to seasonal changes in workload.

  • This position requires a valid driver‘s license and clean driving record.

  • Experience using captive wildlife in educational programs is a plus but not required.

  • Demonstrated ability to promote and respect diversity including ethnic, cultural, linguistic backgrounds and, physical and mental disabilities.

  • Ability to be a positive, constructive team member is vital.

  • Thorough knowledge of planning designing, marketing, scheduling, and evaluating environmental education programs.

  • Familiarity with region’s ecology.


Must be able to work evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Development Officer/Campaign Manager
Location: Topsfield, MA

Massachusetts Audubon Society, the largest conservation organization in New England, is seeking a highly skilled fundraiser to work collaboratively with the Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary to build fundraising capacity and secure resources during a comprehensive campaign. The Development Officer/Campaign Manager would be responsible for securing community philanthropic support including major gifts. This position is a 20 to 30 hour a week position with a partial benefits package. The position reports to the Director of Campaign and Major Gifts.

Principal Responsibilities:

    1. Organize and implement pre-campaign and campaign efforts at Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary.
    2. Organize cultivation, recognition and stewardship events in conjunction with the campaign.
    3. Develop and maintain a list of approximately 50+ active donors and prospects with the capacity, interest and inclination to make major gifts to the campaign.
    4. Work collaboratively with the Resources staff to identify and cultivate new prospects.
    5. Create and implement a cultivation/solicitation/stewardship strategy for each identified prospect.
    6. Work with the President, Vice Presidents, Sanctuary Directors and other senior staff to actively engage the organization’s leadership in the cultivation of donors and prospects.
    7. Implement and ensure compliance with donor recognition and gift policies.
    8. Manage and implement sanctuary related fundraising events.
    9. Actively participate in department staff meetings.
    10. Develop and implement tasks necessary to create and/or maintain local campaign advisory committees.
    11. Actively participate in other related fundraising initiatives.

    Qualifications: The successful candidate must have:


    • A minimum of 5-7 years of progressive development experience, preferably with a portion of that experience at a community based organization.
    • Knowledge of Boston’s North Shore philanthropic community.
    • Demonstrated experience with prospect identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship.
    • The ability to develop a strategy to motivate donors and prospects.
    • Solid knowledge of annual giving and special events.
    • Demonstrated ability to work within an organization emphasizing teamwork, respect and excellence.
    • The ability to think and act strategically and independently.
    • Strong analytical and organizational skills.
    • Experience in successfully managing multiple priorities and/or projects.
    • Possess outstanding verbal and written communication skills;
    • The ability to effectively communicate Mass Audubon’s mission and work;
    • Experience with membership and fundraising databases and Microsoft Office products.
    • Willingness to travel within Massachusetts and possess a valid driver’s license.
    • BA degree or higher.

Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary

Teacher Naturalist II
Location: South Wellfleet, MA

Work full-time at an 1100-acre coastal sanctuary within an existing education department focusing on children and family programs. Responsibilities include developing, coordinating, and teaching environmental education programs for middle and high school students. Programs include in-class lessons, research-based field programs, field walks, wildlife cruises, summer camp and field program, and summer volunteer programs. Additional responsibilities include coordinating public programs for children and families, including after school nature club, vacation camps, family walks and cruises, and weekend programs. Other responsibilities include assisting in development of educational and interpretive materials and other administrative duties as required.

Qualifications: Requires experience teaching middle and high school age students, strong science teaching skills, knowledge of regional natural history, familiarity with Massachusetts State Frameworks, ability to work both cooperatively and independently, the capacity to interact well with the public, and some evening and weekend program hours. Qualifications include a Master‘s degree in environmental education, natural science, environmental science with at least 2-3 years of relevant experience in a nature center or school; or a Bachelor‘s degree in environmental education, natural science, and environmental science with at least 4-5 years of relevant experience in a nature center or school. Certification in CPR, Advanced First Aid, & Lifeguard Training required. Experience with curriculum development, field research techniques, coastal ecosystems, birding skills/knowledge, GIS mapping, helpful. Start date in late February/early March 2009.
