Desktop virtualization tool is faster and easier to use than ever

December 17, 2008 -- Today Sun announced the latest version of xVM VirtualBox, the high-performance, open source desktop virtualization software. xVM VirtualBox 2.1 is faster, easier to use, and delivers enterprise-class features. Best of all, the first major open source hypervisor to support the most popular enterprise host operating systems, including the Solaris OS and OpenSolaris, Microsoft Windows, Linux, and Apple Mac OS X, is still free to download.

You can also purchase an enterprise subscription license, which includes 24/7 premium support from Sun and rights to deploy VirtualBox across your enterprise. It starts at $30 per user each year. An existing enterprise subscription also covers the new release

Desktop to Datacenter Virtualization

New in xVM VirtualBox 2.1

With Sun's xVM VirtualBox, users can create separate virtual machines on their PCs and then install in them any one of several different guest operating systems, regardless of the desktop OS. The software is a small download that installs in less than five minutes. The latest release offers several enterprise-class enhancements, including:

  • 3D acceleration graphics adaptor uses Open Graphics Library (OpenGL) to run high-performance graphics applications, including CAM-based imagery software.
  • Better network performance speeds up network-intensive apps like videos.
  • Bridged networking configuration makes it easier to deploy Web stacks like LAMP or SAMP.

Also, xVM VirtualBox 2.1 supports:

  • Sun Storage 7000 unified storage systems
  • Intel's new Nehalem-based processors
  • Mac OS X on Intel Virtualization Technology
  • VMware's virtual machine disk (VMDK) and Microsoft's virtual hard disk (VHN) file formats
