Deadline for Applying for Assistance Extended 30 Days

Tazewell, VA -- The deadline to apply for assistance after the July floods in Southwestern Virginia has been extended 30 days to October 10, 2001, state and federal officials announced today.
"We extended the registration period in light of the many new registrations each day from the designated counties," said Acting Federal Coordinating Officer Pete Martinasco. "The additional 30 days will provide residents who suffered damages from the flooding adequate time to register for assistance."
"We think the extension is appropriate given the range of losses over a series of storms," said Deputy State Coordinating Officer Harry Colestock. "We hope that anyone who suffered damages during the floods will call to register for assistance."
Individuals who suffered disaster-related damages or property losses as a result of the flooding that began July 8 should call 1-800-462-9029 (TTY 1-800-462-7585 for the speech or hearing impaired) Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Residents and businesses in Buchanan, Dickenson, Lee, Russell, Scott, Smyth, Tazewell and Wise counties can apply for a wide range of state and federal disaster assistance programs that can include funding for temporary housing, U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) low-interest loans for individuals and businesses to repair or replace damaged property, disaster unemployment assistance, and grants for serious needs and necessary expenses not met by other programs.
