CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Air Station Corpus Christi is located in a
corner of the Naval Air Station near the runways. Air Station Corpus Christi
covers an area that spreads between Port Lavaca and Brownsville, and goes
as far South as the Mexican Border. 

 

 The Naval Air Station in Corpus Christi is home to many aircraft and military personnel, including the Coast Guard's Sector Corpus Christi and Air Station Corpus Christi. The Sector was commissioned in May of 2005 by joining all the units within the area of Port Lavaca throughout o Brownsville under one unified command. The purpose of combining all the Coast Guard units into one Sector was to better manage the sweeping changes affecting the Coast Guard since Sept. 11, 2006

Air Station Corpus Christi and Sector Corpus Christi both share a hangar on the edge of the NAS and are both

 under the direction of Capt. John H. Korn, who assumed command at the commissioning ceremony May 13, 2005. Sector Corpus Christi personnel annually conduct over 450 search and rescue cases, assist 591 people in distress, save 83 lives, save $3 million in property, seize over 5,500 lbs of drugs and 22 small craft conducting smuggling and illegal fishing, interdict and detain over 130 illegal immigrants, maintain 1,300 aids to navigation, manage the safe arrival of 2,700 commercial vessels, conduct 900 facility visits, investigate 230 marine related incidents, perform 375 vessel inspections, and provide support for 37 Coast guard cutters and boats in the Atlantic Area fleet.

Corpus Christi rests right alongside the water. The proximity helps to keep the area temperature moderate; June through August or sometimes as late as September are the hottest months averaging around 90 degrees or a little higher. CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Crewmembers from Air Station Corpus Christi prepare for a search and rescue mission here Wednesday, August 18, 2006. In an average year, Corpus Christi covers 450 Search and Rescue missions, saving 83 lives and helping 591 people in distress.

 

130 miles from San Antonio and 200 miles from Austin. Houston is approximately a 3.5 hour drive and Mexico is about 160 miles away. Corpus Christi International Airport provides air transportation from the major airlines.

Padre Island National Seashore is a 15 minute drive from downtown. Other major tourist attractions include the USS Lexington, a decommissioned naval aircraft carrier, the Texas State Aquarium, South Texas Institute for the Arts, and the Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History.

The Port of Corpus Christi is the fourth largest port in the U.S., and the seventh largest city in Texas. According to the 2006 NOAA Coast Pilot 5 , Corpus Christi is the most important commercial city on the coast south west of Galveston. Principal industries include petroleum products, petrochemical and industrial chemicals, natural gas, oil field equipment, and the shipment of general cargo.
