Tackling Work Zone Safety and Mobility Issues

The FHWA has established a Work Zone Peer-to-Peer (P2P) Program to provide short-term assistance to agencies interested in the application of methods, tools and strategies to improve work zone safety and mobility. The Work Zone P2P Program provides state and local transportation agencies easy access to knowledgeable peers across a wide range of work zone issues, all at no cost to these agencies. Assistance is available in the following work zone areas:

  • Safety and Mobility
  • Safety and Mobility Rule
  • Policy
  • Planning and Programming
  • Public Relations / Education / Outreach
  • Analysis Tools
  • Data and Impact Analysis
  • Development and Design
  • Transportation Management Plans and Strategies
  • Contracting and Bidding Procedures
  • Specifications, Methods, and Practices
  • Traveler and Traffic Information
  • Enforcement
  • Incident Management
  • ITS and Innovative Technology
  • Evaluation and Feedback

How Can Transportation Agencies Benefit From the Work Zone P2P?

The Work Zone P2P Program can help agencies assess and manage the potential impacts from road construction and rehabilitation activities. Peers can provide insight on how to address common challenges in implementing work zone management strategies.

Agency personnel can tap the programmatic and technical expertise of transportation professionals across the country to help address questions.

The professionals in this program have implemented innovative work zone practices and are available to share their lessons learned from past experiences.

How Does the Program Work?

A State or local agency can request assistance either by email or by calling the toll-free number and describing their needs to the FHWA-sponsored P2P coordinator.

The coordinator will match the agency with a transportation professional that is experienced and knowledgeable in managing mobility and safety in and around work zones.

The matched peer will then contact the agency to work out the details of the assistance to be provided within the program framework. In some instances, this may include a site visit by the peer.

"The Work Zone P2P Program allows practitioners at the state and local level to find professionals who can share information and lessons learned on work zone management practices."
