A step beyond expected

New York--Mary begins. Her voice breaks as she tries to stifle tears. Herb tightens his embrace on her shoulder. "Easy," he says. She resumes by saying the Coast Guard Auxiliary and the friends he has do a lot to help them deal with his condition.

You can usually find 78-year-old Herb Haeger shuffling down the hallway at the Coast Guard auxiliary office in New York City on Tuesdays and Thursdays. His Coast Guard uniform is held up by suspenders and his rows of ribbons reflect his years of service. From his jovial nature you may never suspect he is terminally ill.

Moment of impact
MTFD.bmp
A red sheen brims over the white paint of a crushed sedan. The air is punctuated by the slurring words of a man bellowing his innocence as police snap silvery handcuffs about his wrists. A more plaintive cry for help is heard among the wailing of sirens and the pop and snap of the Jaws of Life prying open a crumpled car door.

Massive multi-agency search yields big results msfopic1.bmp

As the rust colored doors swung open there was a sharp chemical waft and dozens of white metal barrels appear in the cargo container as sunlight spills in. David Clark places his gloved hands on a barrel and peers inside.  He begins meticulously looking over each of the barrels for spillage and damage in a container big enough to double as a small garage.

Coast Guard marches to the beat of the Irish Bodhran
 stpadpic01.bmp
The sound of the bodhran drum resonates off the buildings down Fifth Avenue in Manhattan Mar. 17th. The sweet wail of the bagpipes helps the marchers count each step and matches them with the beat. For the first time, Coast Guard Sector New York personnel marched in the parade. From the sound of the crowd, it was obvious they were recognized and well received.

More than 50 of the top amateur arm wrestlers gathered in the east lobby of the Port Authority building in New York City.
