Wednesday, March 8, 1995 -- Secretary of Transportation Federico Peña today announced the release of the twenty-third edition of the National Transportation Statistics (NTS) report from the United States Department of Transportation.

"The department's Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) has performed a valuable service for those who require transportation information," Secretary Peña said. "By providing this data in a comprehensive source, statistics widely dispersed throughout numerous government and trade agencies are now readily available from one convenient repository."

The information contained in the NTS illustrates activity for the major transportation modes and is collected to support research, analysis, and decision making across all areas of transportation. The data are provided in five-year increments for 1960-1992, and 1993 where available. In some instances, data extend back to 1955 and are forecast through 1998.

Dr. T. R. Lakshmanan, Director of the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, said that "Accessibility to these data is vital to the transportation community. Over the years, this document has become an indispensable tool for users of transportation statistics who seek reputable figures."

National Transportation Statistics is also available on diskette in Excel format.
