Profiles In Fishing

What does the word "sustainable" mean to you?

To me producing "sustainably" means being able to do what I do (farm oysters) knowing that I am not impairing the ability of future generations to enjoy a clean and healthy marine environment. I get a lot of satisfaction in knowing that by farming oysters I am actually providing ecosystem services (removing excess nutrients and providing habitat) that would be provided by a healthy ecosystem.

What is your role in the sustainable management of U.S. Fisheries?

As an advocate for the shellfish aquaculture industry, I know that I am pushing for the sustainable development of inshore shellfisheries. Over the past decade we have seen steady, annual double-digit increases in production in most of the Northeast. Having worked on shellfish farms for over 25 years, I know that these gains will yield ancillary benefits to the environment in nutrient reductions, productivity enhancements and improvements in habitat quality. Every shellfish farm that gets permitted takes unproductive bottom and turns it into a vibrant artificial reef that is a home for myriad juvenile fish and other critters.

Why is your role so important?

My background in marine science puts me in a unique position to help our industry. Instead of taking that training to the ivory tower of university study I have applied it to develop and improve shellfish aquaculture techniques. As a scientist I am also able to communicate the needs of our industry to scientists, politicians and regulators in terms that they understand. It allows me to be a more effective advocate for our industry.
