All the Mighty World: The Photographs of Roger Fenton, 1852-1860

October 17, 2004-January 2, 2005

Overview: 91 photographs of the English countryside, British cathedrals, figures in oriental costumes, the British royal family, and the Crimean War were presented in this survey of the work of British photographer Roger Fenton. The works were on loan from public and private collections in the United States, Canada, and Europe. The exhibition title came from a phrase in William Wordsworth’s poem Tintern Abbey. This was the first exhibition in newly-renovated photography galleries on the ground floor of the West Building.

The Gallery Vocal Arts Ensemble performed music with texts by William Wordsworth and other 19th-century English poets on October 17 in honor of the exhibition.

The exhibition was organized by the National Gallery of Art, Washington, the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Sarah Greenough, curator and head of the department of photographs, National Gallery of Art; Malcolm Daniel, curator in charge, department of photographs, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; and Gordon Baldwin, associate curator at the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, were the curators. The exhibition at the National Gallery of Art was supported by the Trellis Fund and The Ryna and Melvin Cohen Family Foundation. The exhibition was supported by an indemnity from the Federal Council on the Arts and the Humanities.
