EstuaryLIVE
presented at National Educational Computing Conference
Special
thanks to USDLC, the United Star Distance Learning Consortium,
for featuring EstuaryLIVE at the recent NECC conference
in Atlanta.
USDLC is a non-profit
organization producing online courses for teachers, administrators
and students. 16,000 attendees had a chance to visit the USDLC
booth at the National Educational Computing Conference in Atlanta
on June 25-27, 2007.
Cris
Crissman (right) and Linda Walters of USDLC were able
to encourage thousands of teachers to incorporate
EstuaryLIVE in their curriculums. Linda and Cris were also able
to give away hundreds of the beautiful EstuaryLIVE posters to appreciative
visitors.

Rachel’s
Legacy: Nature Writing to Celebrate and Save the Earth
EstuaryLIVE
Spring 2007 will celebrate Rachel
Carson's 100th birthday with a special feature about the legendary
environmentalist and nature writer. Rachel's
nature writing blended the literary style of a writer with
the keen observation and scientific knowledge of a scientist. Most
of all, her voice conveyed the great respect and appreciation she
had for the Earth.
As part of the
celebration, we have collected a few pieces inspired by nature
written by students; teachers; the North Carolina State Poet
Laureate, Kathryn Stripling
Byer; and Rachel Carson, herself. We hope you enjoy this small
collection. We’ve also provided some resources
on nature writing we hope will inspire your writing as
well as suggested some potential places
to publish and make your voice heard.

Find
us on Google Earth
Free Google
Earth software gives you a good look at the area around Rachel
Carson Reserve and is a great resource for teachers to use.
Students
in Mr. Blake's class at North Whiteville Academy used Google
Earth maps composited on their computer desktops with our
live video stream. They always knew exactly where we were broadcasting
from.
Here
is a screenshot of what these students saw. All they needed to
do was open both programs on their desktop and position them
side by side.
This
technique helped give context to the field trips and make them
even more exciting for students. Download this kmz
file from
Whiteville master teacher John Blake to find the Elive sites on

Behind
the
Scenes
Have
you ever wondered how EstuaryLIVE is produced? Would you like to
know about the technology required to bring you Elive. Are you
a teacher who would like to learn how other teachers are using
these free live, interactive internet fieldtrips in their classrooms?
You are not alone!
So
many folks have asked us these and many other questions that
we've produced a movie that tells the whole Elive story. This
21-minute video takes you behind the scenes to meet many of the
Elive naturalists and scientists plus two great teachers who
have made Elive an important part of their classroom!

CURRICULUM Available Again
A
cross-curricular unit created by master teacher Paul
Brinkley in 2001 has been "rediscovered" and
is available again. Paul
was the Instructional Technology Specialist at East
Lee Middle
School in Sanford, North Carolina and was an "early
adopter"
of
EstuaryLIVE.
The curriculum he created for his school infused EstuaryLIVE
into science, math, language arts, social studies and
art.
Sadly,
Paul passed away in 2003 and the curriculum
was never published. We are excited to have discovered
the completed manuscript and to share it with you.
Though written five years ago, we think you will find
it very useful today.

RAP Returns
We've
had many requests to bring back the world famous Estuary
RAP video. John Roberts (aka Stickey D), a student
at Enloe High School in Raleigh, produced the rap for
EstuaryLIVE to mark the first National Estuaries Day
Celebration in 2001. John is currently a first year
student at the North Carolina School of the Arts in
Winston-Salem and this year he won a High School Emmy
Award for another video production. Click on the link
to play the Estuary
RAP video.
You will need Realplayer on your computer.
Additional
videos which appeared on our old website will be posted
on the Watch Past Fieldtrips page.
Let us know what you are anxious to see again.

WATERS
OF LIFE video plays again
Waters
of Life, a video produced by the NCNERR, takes
teachers and students on a fieldtrip to the delicate
estuarine
ecosystems
of North Carolina. The video features exciting
footage of estuary animals and includes rarely seen
underwater
footage. This video required nearly three years of
filming!.
Teachers
and students may view the video on this website or
download the video and use it in presentations. NCNERR
grants copyright permission to students who want
to use
Waters of Live in their school projects!
