ASCD Position on Environmental Education: Because people in developed nations are rapidly consuming Earth's natural resources and because the world population is increasing rapidly, human beings must take individual and social responsibility for the environment. Schools should provide environmental education.

What is Environmental Education? The goal of environmental education is to develop a world population that is aware of, and concerned about, the environmental and its associated problems, and which has the knowledge, skills, attitudes, motivations, and commitment to work individually and collectively toward solutions of current problems and the prevention of new ones. (Belgrade Charter, 1976).

Further, environmental education is rooted in the belief that

•humans can live compatibly with nature,

•humans can act equitably toward each other,

•human well being is inextricably bound with environmental quality,

•we and the systems we create - our societies, political systems, economies, religions, cultures, technologies - impact the total environment,

•people can make informed decisions that consider future generations, and

•critical and creative thinking, decision making, and communication, as well as collaborative learning must be emphasized, and are essential for active and meaningful learning, both in school and over a lifetime.

Environmental education aims for a democratic society in which effective, environmentally literate citizens participate with creativity and responsibility.

What do we want to accomplish within the EE Network? The goals of the EE Network are to:

•Promote awareness and understanding of environmental education and its role in the formal education system.

•Provide a forum for members to network and discuss issues related to environmental education.

•Provide programming and resources for environmental education and play an advocacy role in support of environmental education.

•Promote environmental education as essential education.

What activities do we plan to undertake?

The EE Network will:

•Conduct a network forum at ASCD Annual Conferences.

•Provide members with current information through EE News, an internet-based newsletter produced by the North American Association for Environmental Education and EE-Link.

•Sponsor this web-page linking ASCD members to the environmental education community.

•Promote EE related activities held at ASCD Annual Conferences.

How can I join? Membership in the EE Network is open to all and free. You do not need to be a member of ASCD to become a member of the EE Network. However, at least half of the EE Network members need to be ASCD members. If you would like to become a member of the EE Network, please send an email to Imad Aoun at iaoun@forestfoundation.org. Please include your complete contact information and whether or not you are currently a member of ASCD. We are particularly interested in knowing what types of activities you think the EE Network should try to sponsor.

On November 13, 2002, environmental educators gathered at the Smithsonian Center for Education and Museum Studies for a forum on environmental education (EE) and school reform. The forum presented environmental education as an efficient, effective, and enjoyable tool to improve schools and explored the challenges and opportunities presented by the new wave of school reform, in particular the federal No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB).

The forum included an overview from the head of a state department of education and presentations from a classroom teacher, a school principal, a zoo educator, and a service-learning expert. After the presentations, Dr. Julian Agyeman of Tufts University moderated an audience discussion.
