EE-Link is desgined to be an extremely fast, easy-to-use site. To accomplish these goals, we choose technology and software specifically focused on speed and reliability. EE-Link is authored using a custom programming (see our Link Management System summary) tool. This tool is available to other groups -- just send us an email Our operating system and other server tools are developed by the efforts of a huge base of volunteer programmers throughout the Internet
working under what is known as the "Open Source" software model. From the efforts of this large, loosely coordinated group comes LINUX, the free UNIX-like operating system that powers EE-Link's servers.
Also, the Open Source software model is the source of EE-Link's
web server software, Apache. Like LINUX, Apache is a freely-available
commercial-quality product.
And the list goes on. For email, we use Qmail, a modern replacement for Sendmail and for email lists, we use EZ Mail List Manager a.k.a. EZMLM. Together, Quail and EZMLM can process huge amounts of email with very little overhead.
Our search software that we use for multi-site searching is HTDig from San Diego State University. Our database software is PostgreSQL, originally from UC Berkeley and MySQL. Both are high-performace relational SQL database engines. Our Link Management System uses PostgreSQL along with PERL and Python, two popular and very high-performance scripting languages.
We also use PHP for PHP_Talk and other dynamic content features on EE-Link. The hardware supporting EE-Link is AMD Athlon and XP servers with IDE disk drives and modest amounts of RAM (256-512MB). This keeps our cost of hardware very low which allows us to allocate more funds to custom software development -- the core of EE-Link's services. Enjoy the site! Paul Nowak, Jr. |
