"Public School Insights: What is Working in our Public Schools" is a project of the Learning First Alliance, a permanent partnership of 18 major national education associations that represent over 10 million parents, educators, and policymakers. Project Learning Tree (PLT), in partnership with the World Forestry Center, has completed a new set of secondary activities Global Connections: Forests of the World. The module consists of nine activities that provide students with the opportunity to do research and apply critical thinking skills to consider the social, economic, and environmental implications that underlie decisions about forest management. Educators can use the module in biology, geography, agriculture, and other science and social studies courses at the high school or early college level.

The Science Education for Public Understanding Program (SEPUP) is seeking teachers to validate Ecology and Cell tests. All that is required is to give the test to students and return answer sheets to SEPUP. The tests are 40-50 questions, a mix of multiple choice and short answer, and are all directly from, or based on test questions from national test bank sources. Each test is designed to take one class period. Seeking test results by mid-June. Funding and grant restrictions prohibit pay for this help, but a small gift certificate to Amazon.com is offered as a thank you. Opportunity #2 SEPUP is accepting applications for field test centers to participate in the national field test of our new course "Science in Global Issues" for the 2008-2009 school year. The EcoTipping Points Web site features approximately 100 environmental success stories collected from around the world by a team of scientists and journalists. The stories display a diversity of detail but have something important in common: a ‘lever’ referred to as an ‘EcoTipping Point’ — that is, a community-based process switching environmental decline to a course of restoration and sustainability. Building upon insights from the science of human ecology, the EcoTipping Points Web site offers lessons from the stories, while explaining how EcoTipping Points work and what it takes to create them.

The National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Teacher at Sea program gives K-16 teachers an expenses-paid, first-hand experience of science and life at sea. Teachers may select a cruise aboard one of NOAA's 19 ships, of which there are three main research vessel types: Fisheries, Oceanographic/coastal, and hydrographic. United Nations Foundation project called The People Speak (TPS) encourages young people to be actively engaged on global issues and to understand the value of global cooperation. The People Speak Global Debate will begin in October 2007 with the topic of climate change and involves high school students researching the debate topic and preparing clear, persuasive arguments for both sides of the issue. Students will present their arguments and coordinate the entire student body to vote on the topic. TPS will tally national and international results, with approximately 20 countries involved, that will show where students stand on important global issues.

Action-Research for the Community Problem Solving (ARCPS) is defined as a process that enables students and teachers to participate more fully in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of educational activities aimed at resolving an issue that the learners have identified.
Claude Poudrier has been using ARCPS with his six grade students since September 1993, and over the past five years has directed a professional development ARCPS program in Canada for teachers and educators. Claude is forming a network of educators that are using the ARCPS model that will serve as a forum to share ideas, discuss lessons learned, and further develop the ARCPS model. Oil City Elementary Magnet School in Louisiana, a model Project Learning Tree (PLT) certified school, was presented on June 19 with the "National School Change Award" in recognition of its significant improvement. This annual honor is given to six U.S. schools by the American Association of School Administrators, New York's Fordham University Graduate School of Education, and Pearson Education.
